New Work: Forbidden Fruit
My latest works are the first fruits (if you’ll pardon the pun) of an ongoing project exploring themes of temptation, female desire and patriarchal frameworks.
Throughout history, women across the globe have been depicted as ‘temptresses’, where attempts to explore female agency are seen as seduction tactics. Looking at iconic figures such as Eve, Lilith, Marilyn Monroe and Pamela Anderson, for example, we can trace a problematic cycle. When legitimacy is withheld, desire can become the only available form of influence or power, yet to use this invites further condemnation.
I wanted to highlight the difficulty many women face in expressing authentic sexual desire without it being mistaken for the fantasy men project onto them. My work looks at how the 'temptress' archetype functions less as a character trait and more as a survival strategy.
